Blog #2

Icon #1: My Bubby (Grandma)
My Bubby, which is the Yiddish word for grandma, represents an Icon of perseverance and strength. To me she is the definition of an icon that inspires people because of her ability to push on through her life, despite the unjust and despicable acts that were committed against her. At the age of 18, my Bubby was captured and placed into a concentration camp in the Holocaust.

Her life was constantly hanging by a thread and she unfortunately lost everyone in her family. But she lived and what impacts me the most is how she did not allow this atrocity to keep her from living her life. What was important to her was life itself. She could have been angry and mad at the world for what happened to her but then the enemy would have won. Instead, she decided to follow her passion of cooking and being a mother. She allowed that experience to teach her the value of life and lived every moment, till the very end, as best as she could.

My Bubby is so important to me because when I was able to spend time with her I never thought about the tragedy that happened to her. I only saw the joy she had in life and it was incredible. She was such a strong person and was never ashamed of being Jewish or having to live through the Holocaust. She showed me the importance of being proud of who you are, no matter what other people try to tell you or think. You must stand up for who you are and never forget it. To me, that is one of the most important lessons to take with you through life.

Icon #2: Immigration
Immigration represents a better and more fair life. My father was born in Romania and grew up in a time where Jewish people were sought out and taken advantage of. His house was taken away from him and his parents simply because of their religion. They knew that they deserved and were capable of so much more. With that in mind, they decided to come to America to pursue their dreams and allow my father to have the best education and future he possibly could. Immigration allows people to fairly and openly seek out their dreams and wants without the fear of being oppressed.

Immigration is important to American culture because America is made up of people from all over the world. We are a contemplation of all sorts of races, religions, and nationalities. Through immigration we are able to learn about other parts of the world and bring their food, culture, and traditions into our own country. I believe what makes us so great is the diversity we possess and the openness we have towards things that we aren't used to.

Immigration is an important icon to me because without it I wouldn't be who I am today. I feel so proud to be the first generation on my dad's side to ever be born in America, and I know that he feels proud of that fact too. He came here to seek out a better life for not only himself, but for the future family he would have. Immigration gave him those opportunities in life to pursue his dreams in an open environment and I feel very fortunate to be an American yet am also proud of where my family came from and what it took for them to get here.

Icon #3: Facebook
I believe Facebook is the social media icon of our generation and has impacted what was known as "networking." We are now able to communicate with people all over the world for free. We don't have to pay to call them or text them, or wait till they e-mail us back, we can instantly talk to them, video chat with them, share pictures, and our lives. It allows for anyone to see our lives as they unfold. To me, Facebook is the new communication tool and has become an icon known not just around the country, but the world.

Facebook is important to American culture because we have now become a nation that is obsessed with all sorts of media, may it be in the form of television, watching the news, reading a Kindle, video chatting on our iPhones, or sharing our lives via Facebook. It is a tool we all use to show our personal lives to our friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else you can click to add.

Facebook is important to me because I feel like it is a tool for the future of our generation. We were present for the birth of Facebook and and in very young stages of our lives created our pages and made friends. We now have those friends for as long we, or they, choose to keep them. Imagine going to one of your friend's page in twenty years from now to see their relationship status, if they have kids, and where they work. We can use Facebook as a way to not only keep in touch, but, to make connections with each other, to use that to our advantage. An advantage of having the possibility to make a connection with getting a job, advancing in your own job, or creating a business venture. We will already have set the ball rolling to establishing relationships that can help us in our future lives. Facebook is at our disposal.

Icon #4: Harry Potter
Harry Potter is the definition of a children's book that can be enjoyed by all ages and generations. It is the definition of a series of books that will hook you in till the very end and leave you wanting more. I will always remember the Harry Potter books to be some of the first I read and the first series I was ever hooked onto. It allowed me to be sucked into a magical world over many due to having multiple books.
Harry Potter is an American and a world icon because readers are able to relate to the characters even though we might not all be able to make a magical connection. We can relate in the various issues they go through; growing up, finding love, losing loved ones, and the stress of homework, to name a few. It is a book that allows people to not only connect with the series itself but with other people who enjoy reading them just as much as you do. It has sparked movies, playing cards, props, and even an amusement park.

Harry Potter is one of my favorite things in life. It will always have a place in my heart and I will carry that onto my children and allow them to experience the same enjoyment I did. It allowed me to realize how incredible reading is and the beauty that comes along with it. You are able to transport yourself into another world that is unknown yet very relatable. Harry Potter opened the doors for my love of reading and my desire to find books that make a lasting impact.
