Blog #24

I am most looking forward to having the opportunity to explore the law field. I wouldn't normally be able to work alongside a lawyer but I'm excited for this chance to do that. I think that I'm interested to see if I'm actually going to enjoy working on cases and do all of the work that goes along with it. I also love that I will be working with a criminal defense lawyer becuase that is not an area I ever thought I would explore. I know it is a lot more than just fighting for a case, there is a ton of busy work. I know that this will give me a better insight into whether or not law is something I would like to pursue.

I am most concerened about two things. The first thing is that my lack of law knowledge will prevent me from fully understanding things. People who explore the jusitce or law field go to college for a long time in order to prepare for their career. It is definatley intimadating knowing how much knowlede everyone has and coming into a situationw here I have no experience at all. I am also concerened about parking becuase it is in Downtown and parking is both limited and expensive.

The work that I plan to do will to help my mentor prepare for trial. She has a big case coming up and I will help her get read to go to trial. I know that it will include organizing papers, reading through various reports, and preparing other work for her. I plan on going to court to see the trial and what it takes to question a witness, present evidence, and have an opening statement. My hopes for the project is that I will learn how to prepare a case and how to make it strong for our defendant.

My goals for the site visit include familiarizing myself with the area so I know where the best place to park is and what is around in case I need to run errands or get lunch. I also want to meet my mentor and get a sense of who she is in order to better prepare for my internship. I also will be visiting her at court so this is a great chance for me to see what a court looks like and how it works.

My biggest questions about internship are:
What are my hours going to be?
How often will we be at court?
What does a usual day for my mentor look like?
What kind of errands or places does she go to prepare?
How often does she meet with her defendant?
