When our class went out to the commons to read the final Icon's Artist Statements there were many well written pieces. The first one I read was written by Luke. I enjoyed his use of the tip, Make Meaning Early. A sentence that used that tip was, "I'm addicted to the smell of cookies." It is a simple sentence, yet it stood out to me because I was able to learn more about Luke in just seven words. I also enjoyed his sentence when he compared himself in the kitchen to a mad scientist. The comparison struck me because I could vividly picture Luke frantically running around the kitchen, connecting his next recipe. I would recommend reading Luke's blog post for the Icons Project.
Another piece that stood out to me was written by Noah. From the start, I was immediately drawn into his statement. "As a four year-old, brushing my teeth was not my favorite activity. I whined, screamed, and rebelled as much as I could, but when my mother said, “Brush… or no Dr. Seuss”, I instantly caved." The first sentence used Make Meaning Early and caused me as a reader to not only connect, as I used to hate brushing my teeth, but also wonder why it wasn't he favorite activity. The next sentence does a great job of using Activate Your Verbs. In my head I can picture this little boy doing anything to get out of brushing his teeth. Yet the one thing that motivates him as a book. Now I wondered why this book meant so much to him. Noah did a great job of grabbing my attention from the start by using the tips, as well as getting me to ask questions and wonder about his piece, causing me to read on. You can read the rest of Noah's work here.
